Apostle Marko, also known as Mark the Evangelist, is traditionally believed to be the author of the Gospel of Mark. He is associated with several major shrines worldwide, including the Basilica di San Marco in Venice, Italy, and Saint Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Alexandria, Egypt. According to biblical and traditional information, Mark the Evangelist is identified with John Mark, one of the Seventy Disciples sent out by Jesus. Coptic tradition suggests that Mark was born in Cyrene, North Africa, and later traveled to Alexandria, where he faced persecution for his Christian teachings. There is an “unbroken tradition” linking Mark the Evangelist with John Mark, who is considered the cousin of Barnabas. Hippolytus of Rome distinguishes between Mark the Evangelist, John Mark, and Mark the cousin of Barnabas.
